In the morning when she rise
When she opens up her eyes
She sees the sun come up over Baghdad on the Hudson

She climbs up on a chair
Runs a comb through her long brown hair
In the full-length mirror she studies her reflection

She’s blowing off the dust
From her mothers jewellery box
Picks out her favourite necklace
And kisses it for luck

So many people in this town
There are so many people
But there’s no one around

Now she walks down to the street
Sees the frozen smiles, the insistent feet
The secret lives where strangers hide their heartbreaks

Now she’s waiting for the train
A busker sings a sad refrain
Their eyes lock as she drops a coin into his guitar case

Somewhere a song is sung
Beyond the stars, beyond the sun
Where the planets hum in unison
For you and me and everyone

So many people in this town
